Mother's Union

Mothers' Union meetings take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30pm (except during the summer months of June, July and August). They are normally held at the Green School, though in January and September begin with a short service in church.

All our meetings are open to anyone with no commitment to join the Mothers’ Union or attend regularly. We ask for a contribution of £1 per meeting attended, which helps with the expenses and work of the Mothers' Union.

Our programme is varied, with advanced notice being given in the Churches monthly magazine. Sometimes we have a speaker on a subject that reflects the objectives of the Mothers' Union, or fellowship and outreach. At other times are meetings may be a discussion, a contemplative session preparing us for Advent or Lent, or a practical session involving craft or packing Christmas boxes.

We support Church events and groups and also help the Boston Women's Aid with donations of toiletries and other items, as well as supporting Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping. We have joint events with other local MU branches as well.

Ladies' Guild

The ‘Ladies Guild’ group is a social group, formed in 1963. It is affiliated to St Guthlac's Church, though it is ecumenical group, so is open to all women to attend. Meetings, held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from September to June, are a friendly gathering with speakers and visits. Any funds raised are used to support Church projects and the Green School where the meetings are usually held.

Meetings in the Green School, usually start at 7.30pm. Members pay a very modest annual subscription. Visitors and guests are always welcome to attend as a one-off, for which a small charge is made on the evening.

Traditionally the September meeting starts with a short service in Church, followed by a fun packed fund-raiser, such as an auction, a bring and buy, or tea party. The January meeting is a usually meal at a local pub and in June we invite guests to join us for our annual outing. Other meetings during the year include illustrated talks, demonstrations or a trip to somewhere local. We have recently enjoyed a cheese and wine evening, a quiz night, and an outing to Molecy Mill in West Deeping.

Bell Ringing

We have an active band of bellringers of all ages and abilities. The bells are rung regularly for Church Services and also for special and state occasions.

We welcome visiting ringers from other churches, and regularly provide help with ringing at Peterborough Cathedral.

We have a rewarding practice night on Thursday evenings in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Our band has a great reputation for teaching newcomers how to ring and we love to show people of all ages the enjoyment that can be had by controlling the heavy metal bells in the church tower. As part of our commitment to teaching and promoting bellringing, we also ring peals (approximately 3 hours ringing) and quarter peals (45 minutes ringing) on various occasions throughout the year.

Bell ringing is a team activity that stimulates the brain and also helps keep you fit (especially climbing some of those tower steps!). Of course, it also makes a glorious sound! Ringers come from all walks of life and generally range in age from just ten years old to those in their eighties. If you are interested in learning to ring and joining our band, please do get in touch with us -

We hold regular coffee mornings on the 2nd Saturday of each month in the Green School from 10.30am.

At our coffee mornings, we serve home-made scones and cakes with a drink, and there is an opportunity to buy cakes too. We also have a raffle and sell books and jigsaws, and plants when they are available. Whilst these are very sociable occasions (we have two regulars who come over from Peterborough each month for that reason!), they are also an important part of our fundraising to keep our beautiful church building in good order, with heating and lighting as needed. All are welcome to join us and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Environmental Group

At St. Guthlac’s we are doing what we can to improve our environmental impact. The Environmental Group meets to raise awareness of issues relating to caring for God’s wonderful world and to help us to implement positive changes in practical ways.

Since forming, the group have:

Encouraged an annual season focusing on the environment within the churches worship.

Taken part in local community projects, such as litter picking.

Supported national green initiatives to raise awareness of the devastating effects of climate change, and encouraged other local organisations to be involved too.

Helped the church reduce our own impact on the environment, such as encouraging recycling, promoting car sharing, and limiting our energy use to reduce our carbon footprint.

Made positive changes to the churchyard and therefore our local wildlife, by encouraging native plants and introducing bug hotels and hedgehog houses.

This year we were delighted to win the Silver A Rocha Eco Church award!

We are now working towards the Church of England’s aim to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The Environmental Group enjoy working with other local groups as well, such as, recently, with children from our Young Explorers group and children from William Hildyard Primary School.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please do get in touch via our Administrator as we would love to hear from you.

Choir

If you enjoy singing, or would like to learn, please get in touch!

The Church Choir usually sings in all four choral parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). Its main role is to provide a lead for the congregation in all aspects of services. The choir also contributes items on their own, usually in the form of anthems or special service settings. These are hugely rewarding and enable a wide range of technique training to be incorporated into practices. The range of music we sing dates from the early 16th Century to the present day. We work hard to ensure that our performances are accurate, stylish and appropriate to the service in question. We wear choir robes for most services. All robes are provided as is all music you’d need.

Can’t read music? That doesn’t matter as we rehearse new music for at least three weeks before it is sung in service so that everyone has a chance to learn it properly and sing at their best.

Unsure your voice is good enough or think you can’t sing? That’s just not true - You use the same voice for talking, as for singing! It’s amazing what a bit of (free) help will do to bring out your hidden talent! We are not after soloists. We need people who are enthusiastic, can hold a tune, can read the words and enjoy singing together with everyone else. You’d be amazed how much fun it is!

Under the guidance of a professional musician, weekly practices are on a Friday evening. As well as learning music for services, elements of musical and vocal tuition are built in and all in a fun, enjoyable and safe environment.

Our Junior section for both boys and girls aged 7 upwards starts at 6.15pm with adults joining in at 6.30. Younger members can depart from 7.15. Adults carry on until 7.45 at the latest. A special fun programme for youngsters engages them in the basics of good singing, teaches more about our faith and explores parts of the church building in greater detail.

If you're a parent or carer with an interested youngster (whatever age), an older teenager that wants to sing, a boy whose voice is changing and is unsure what is going to happen, an adult who is interested in knowing more or wants to return to singing after ‘time off’, or someone else completely, then please get in touch or simply come along to choir practice on a Friday evening. Everyone is welcome.

For more information or an informal chat, please contact Peter our Director of Music. We'd love to hear from you!

We have a number of activities for children and young people here at St Guthlac's.

Messy Church

Messy Church involves creativity, celebration, and hospitality. It is for all ages, though often children engage well and enjoy it. It is a fun time with crafts and games to explore a Biblical theme through getting messy, as well as hearing a story and sharing a prayer, song, and meal together. Our monthly Messy Church will be meeting on the third Saturday of the month, 2:30-4:30pm, in the Green School

Sunday Club

Our Sunday Club group offers fun activities and crafts, as we to share Christian teachings with enthusiasm and friendship.

The group meets weekly during school terms in the Green School at 9.45am, apart from the 1st Sunday of the month. Following their activities, the children join the rest of the congregation in Church for the final part of the 10am Sunday Service.

On the 1st Sunday of the month, the children join the rest of the congregation for an interactive All Age Service.

Events during the year

We also hold a craft workshop every Good Friday and other events throughout the year for families such as parties, picnics and trips (recently we enjoyed going tobogganing, to the pantomime and a forest school session). The children also take part in presentations in church services throughout the year and other events too. Anyone is welcome and we hope to see you soon.

To find out more about our activities for children and young people, please contact our Children’s and Youth Worker.
